School Nursing

Helpful Information:

Statement:
Haverhill School Nurses work to promote a healthy school environment so all may attain their highest educational goals. The Nurses accomplish this through collaboration with educational team and parents. Haverhill professional nurses coordinate health needs of all students, making adjustments to individual student's needs.

Haverhill School Health Services developed a medication policy to ensure the health and safety of all children.

  • Medication (prescription and over-the-counter) will not be administered without the doctor's order and written parent permission.
  • A responsible adult must deliver medications to school in original labeled container. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE.
  • Certain pain medications may not be allowed in school; please consult your nurse.
  • Medications three times a day may be given before school, after school and at bedtime.
  • Field trips require separate labeled medication bottles to be delivered to school by parent.

Immunization:
Immunizations must be updated as mandated by the Department of Public Health. Clinics are available at the Haverhill Board of Health-Call 978-374-2325 for hours. To enter school, proper immunizations are required. Please see your School Nurse.

Screenings:
They are done for heights, weights, and scoliosis. Each child's vision and hearing is screened yearly at the elementary level. Parents will be notified of any problems that necessitate a medical follow-up. The state of Massachusetts mandated that all students in grades 5 through 9 be screened beginning in the fifth grade. Physician referrals will be made as needed. Yearly heights and weights are taken on children in grades 1, 3, 5, and 7. Physical exam forms, to be completed by your child's doctor, will be sent home at the end of fifth grade.

Health Records:
To best meet your child's health needs and to keep his/her records up to date, please notify the nurse of any changes in health status as well as the administration of any immunizations.
A physical is requied upon school entry.

Helpful Tips:

  • If your child is sick with a fever over 100.6, vomiting, diarrhea, unknown rash, contagious disease such as impetigo and conjunctivitis - DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL. Call your school nurse for assistance or guidance in returning to school.
  • Call your school nurse if you need assistance with obtaining health care, health insurance, and referrals for health, dental, or mental concerns.
  • Your school nurse is an available resource for you and your child.
