Mayor James J. Fiorentini > Press Release

April 26, 2007
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Mayor Fiorentini Commemorates Arbor Day with Tree Plantings

Mayor James J. Fiorentini will celebrate Arbor Day by planting an elm tree on South Elm Street on Friday, April 27 at 11 am. The Mayor will also take part in a tree planting ceremony at the Whittier School on Friday, May 4, at 9 am. The media is invited to both ceremonies. Fiorentini said:

“I invite all Haverhill residents to celebrate and enjoy our trees on Arbor Day. Trees are great for our environment, are a renewable natural resource, enhance the economic vitality of our business areas, and beautify our community.”

Over the past three years, Mayor Fiorentini and the City of Haverhill have made a concerted effort to plant new trees in the city. During that time, the city has planted nearly 500 trees, of which approximately 150 are disease-resistant elm trees.

In 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees, and this holiday, called Arbor Day, has been observed with the planting of trees for many years in Massachusetts and for over 30 years in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world.
