Mayor James J. Fiorentini > Press Release

July 23, 2007
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

City Adds New Police Patrols to High Crime Areas

Mayor James J. Fiorentini today announced that the City has added additional police patrols to the Mount Washington and lower Acre areas of the City.

The additional police patrols were paid for by a re-allocation of block grant funding. Mayor Fiorentini has ordered the $25,000 in block grant money be used for additional police patrols in low income areas.

The Police Department used its computerized crime analysis program called “Compstat” to identify the exact areas and streets which had the highest incidences of reported crime. Police Chief Alan Denaro then directed the additional patrols to be in those areas. Allocating scarce resources identified through computerized crimes reports is called “hot-spot policing” which is the newest innovation in the Haverhill Police Department.

Making the announcement Mayor Fiorentini said:

“Keeping citizens safe is one of the highest obligations of my administration.”
Our budget for the upcoming year, also adds two additional patrolmen; however, it will take months for those patrolmen to be hired. Accordingly, I have directed that $25,000 of CDBG funding be made available immediately for additional police patrols in areas identified of having the greatest risk of crime. Those patrols have already begun. Friday night, I will be going out with the police on those patrols and have asked area residents to come and meet with us, share concerns and provide feedback.”
