Mayor, Board of Health Chair Urge Caution When Shoveling

Mayor James J. Fiorentini and Board of Health Chair Dr. Carl Rosenbloom today urged residents to be extremely cautions when attempting to shovel snow.

Dr. Rosenbloom indicated that “snow shoveling is one of the leading precipitators for a sudden heart attack in men. Residents who have high blood pressure or who are prone to heart disease should not shovel.”

The Mayor noted that the snow is heavier than it appears, and urged residents to be cautious.  “People who do shovel are urged to not lift large amounts, go slowly and pace yourself.  Shoveling is dangerous for those aged fifty and above.”

The Mayor noted that the Boys Club has people available for shoveling.

“Tomorrow I will ask our recreation department to contact the Boys Club and the schools to see if they can provide a list of people willing to shovel for senior citizens.”
