Mayor Chooses Landscaper for Downtown Boardwalk and possible Bradford Rail-Trail

HAVERHILL- Mayor James J. Fiorentini has chosen the firm which undertook much of the design for the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston, the series of parks above the Big Dig I-93 tunnels, as the landscape designers for the new Boardwalk.  The boardwalk is expected to start development this summer, with new and rebuilt sections behind the Tap restaurant and Haverhill Bank.

The Mayor chose the firm of Crosby, Schlessinger and Smallridge as the developers.  The firm has been in existence for over 25 years as a planning and urban design firm.  CSS has some notable projects in Boston under its portfolio, including Langone Park in the North End, the Fort Point Channel Project and others.

The firm will help to design the boardwalk to be located behind the Tap, the redesign of the existing boardwalk on Merrimack Street and any landscape architectural work required for a rail trail in Bradford.

The firm was selected after a proposal process reviewed by city, business and community members.

“I’m pleased to have Crosby, Schlessinger and Smallridge on board with this project that will symbolize the City’s renaissance and reconnection to the Merrimack River,” stated Mayor Fiorentini.  “CSS will be working with the City Engineer’s Office and engineers at Earth Tech on this project.

We want to make the boardwalk a downtown destination, that will attract people to our downtown.  Good design is part of this.”
