FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Mayor Proposes new Tools to Keep Downtown Clean

Mayor James J. Fiorentini today announced new tools to help keep downtown clean.

In response to newspaper stories showing a large accumulation of cigarette butts on Merrimack Street, the Mayor ordered the highway department to put new smoking receptacles on Merrimack Street.

At the same time, the Mayor proposed a new ordinance to strengthen Haverhill’s anti-littering laws. Under the new law proposed by the Mayor, those who litter downtown sidewalks could be fined up to $50, and those who allow litter to accumulate in front of their businesses without sweeping or cleaning could also face fines.

“This is in keeping with my long-standing commitment to keep downtown clean. This commitment has to be a partnership, the city can do it alone. The businesses have to help and the people who congregate on the street have to help. Keeping our city clean is everyone’s responsibility.

The city will do its part by sweeping the streets twice a week, providing trash cans and cigarette receptacles.

The vast majority of downtown business owners already do their part. Most owners regularly sweep in front of their businesses.

Unfortunately, a very small minority do not do their part. This change in the law will strengthen our enforcement powers to make certain that everyone does their part to keep downtown clean.”
