FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
City to Host Hollywood Production:
Warner Brothers Major Motion Picture to Film in City in May
HAVERHILL- Mayor James J. Fiorentini proudly announced that Haverhill will be among the locations in which a major Hollywood motion picture will be filmed in early May. The Mayor announced that his office had secured the locations for several scenes in the upcoming Warner Brothers movie, “This Side of the Truth.”
“This is an exciting development with positive economic ramifications for the City,” stated Mayor Fiorentini. “I have been marketing Haverhill as a great place to film movies within the state, as Massachusetts has been luring several Hollywood productions with its tax incentives.”
“We came close to luring another movie recently and Hollywood studios returned, recognizing what Haverhill has to offer: natural diversity with urban, neighborhood and rural settings, expedited permitting, convenient highway access, a great business climate and a host of historic buildings and institutions,” noted the Mayor. “In many respects, the same factors luring business and redevelopment opportunities are the same factors luring the film industry.”
“Studios will often return to a municipality they feel comfortable working in, and we intend to expose the studios to what we have to offer them here in Haverhill.”
“This Side of the Truth,” a comedy, will star British comedian Ricky Gervais, who also wrote the script. He gained notoriety in the BBC original version of the television comedy series, “The Office,” as well as the recent HBO series “Extras.” While the PG-13 movie also features Hollywood stars Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe and Ed Norton, only Gervais is among the major stars expected-- at this juncture-- to film in Haverhill.
One of the major Haverhill filming locations will be the Merrivista Senior Community at 100 Water Street. Up to two other undisclosed City locations are being finalized for what will be up to two days of shooting. Much of the rest of the film will be shot in Lowell. Some Merrivista residents will be afforded the opportunity to be ‘extras’ in the film if they desire, as well as get a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of how major motion pictures are produced. Hollywood scouts who have been visiting Haverhill frequently selected the Merrivista for this film for a number of artistic reasons.
The Mayor’s Office has been making arrangements to accommodate the logistical challenges involved with filming a movie, including parking and security. However, these minor details pale in comparison to the economic benefits.
“It’s not just the few actors that must be taken into account, it’s the scores of production workers that accompany these productions,” noted the Mayor. “All of the crews need hotels to stay in, meals to eat and places to buy things. The crews require tent rentals, supplies, etc. The economic spillover effect for local merchants is tremendously positive,” noted the Mayor. “Warner Brothers is expected to reimburse the City for any costs as well, so there’s no negative impact on taxpayers.”
“It’s only fitting that Hollywood returns to the city where move mogul Louis B. Mayer got his start. This is real win for the City,” concluded the Mayor.
