FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Mayor Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day at City Hall
Official Irish Flag-raisers: Cornelius and Sarah Broderick
Mayor James J. Fiorentini today proclaimed March, 2008 as Irish American Heritage Month and has named Cornelius and Sarah Broderick as Haverhill’s official Flag-raisers of the Irish flag-raisers. In recognition of St. Patrick’s Day and also in honor of the late John Linnehan, they will raise the Irish flag at City Hall on March 17th, at 9AM. The flag will be dedicated to John Linnehan.
Cornelius and Sarah Broderick are Irish immigrants and have lived in the Bradford section of Haverhill since 1958. Cornelius came to American in 1949 from Abbey Feale in County Limerick and Sarah arrived in 1952 from Glenamaddy, County Galway. They met in America and settled in Haverhill, as Cornelius worked for the Haverhill Gas Company until his retirement. They have 2 children and 6 grandchildren and are members of Sacred Hearts parish.
Mayor Fiorentini stated:
“As we honor those of Irish heritage, we honor all those whose families came from other countries, cultures and traditions. Recognizing the diversity of our city brings us all together in the richness of our being Americans.
“The Brodericks came from Ireland to have better lives. Their success here in Haverhill is a testament to all those who have come to America over the past 200 years. We are enriched by all our immigrants and I ask that everyone, regardless of nationality or background, join with me on the 17th for the raising of the Irish Flag.
“I want to call to remembrance another son of Ireland, John Linnehan, who has passed away recently. Mr. Linnehan left behind many friends and family in Haverhill and we will dedicate this Irish Flag to his memory.”
