Mayor James J. Fiorentini > Press Release August 1, 2008 MAYOR PRESENTS “OUTSTANDING CITIZEN” AWARD TO JOHN KATSAROS FOR HIS BRAVERY DURING WORLD WAR II Mayor James J. Fiorentini has presented Haverhill’s “Outstanding Citizen” award to Mr. John Katsaros recognizing his heroism and sacrifice during World War II. Mr. Katsaros has written a book called “Code Burgundy: The Long Escape” about his experiences during this war. He served in the US Army Air Force and in 1944, at the age of 20, he was shot down over Frankfurt, Germany. He was captured twice by the Germans and was rescued by the French Underground. Through his actions, he was able to bring back vital information to Britain. In 1972, the French Government recognized Mr. Katsaros’ great courage and valor. Mayor Fiorentini feels that it was time for the United States and the City of Haverhill to recognize him as well. The Mayor commends the extraordinary actions undertaken by Mr. Katsaros in the European theatre and presents him with this award for his outstanding bravery and service to our country.
