FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

HAVERHILL OFFERS RAIN BARREL WATER CONSERVATION PROGRAM

HAVERHILL- Mayor James J. Fiorentini today announced that the City has teamed up with The New England Rain Barrel Company to offer all area residents rain barrels as a way to conserve water and help the environment.  A rain barrel collects water from the roof when it rains and stores it for use during dry conditions and when water ban restrictions are in place.

“I’m pleased to be able to offer this feature for Haverhill homeowners.  Using a rain barrel is an excellent way to conserve water, which has been a trademark of my administration,” stated Mayor Fiorentini.  “In addition, the hundreds of gallons of potential free water will save homeowners money in the long run while helping the environment and reduce run-off into the Merrimack River.”

The average homeowner uses approximately 40% of water for outdoor use. One-inch of rainfall on a 1,200 square foot roof will yield over 700 gallons of water.  A quarter inch run-off from an average roof will easily fill the barrel. If you have 5 storms a season, that equals 275 gallons of free water.

The rain barrels are made from 55-gallon blue plastic recycled containers. The top does not come off, so no children, pets or materials can get in the barrel.  Barrels have a six-inch diameter inlet opening covered with a screened louver to keep insects and debris out.  The barrels have 2 brass spigots; one to connect a hose for watering, and one for overflow, so one can redirect the water away from a home.  The barrel also features a 5-foot hose with a shutoff valve.  Multiple barrels are available for additional capacity.

The Mayor announced that, for a limited time, Haverhill residents and those from surrounding areas, may purchase the rain barrels for $66.50 each, a discount off the retail price of $99.

The company will be taking orders through July 14, 2008 and has scheduled a general delivery of the rain barrels on Tuesday July 22 at the Department of Public Works Garage, 500 Primrose Street, from 3 p.m. through 6 p.m. If you are interested in ordering a rain barrel, call The New England Rain Barrel Company at 877-977-3135 or order online at www.nerainbarrel.com.
