Mayor James J. Fiorentini > Press Release November 4, 2008 MAYOR VETOES RENAMING OF BANK ROAD Mayor James J. Fiorentini today vetoed the renaming of Bank Road in Haverhill to DeLuca Drive. In his veto message, the Mayor said that he was basing his veto on two factors: a letter from the DeLuca family asking that the road not be named for them, and research showing that the road is a State road and the city council does not have jurisdiction to rename it. In his veto message, Fiorentini asked that the city council work with him to develop a fitting memorial to Lance Corporal Nicholas Schiavoni and Lance Corporal Dimitrios Gavriel, both Haverhill natives who were killed in Iraq.
Fiorentini said that he would have a proposal before the council as soon as possible on a fitting way to honor both men. |
