Mayor James J. Fiorentini > Press Release

November 4, 2008
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

MAYOR VETOES RENAMING OF BANK ROAD

Mayor James J. Fiorentini today vetoed the renaming of Bank Road in Haverhill to DeLuca Drive.

In his veto message, the Mayor said that he was basing his veto on two factors:  a letter from the DeLuca family asking that the road not be named for them, and research showing that the road is a State road and the city council does not have jurisdiction to rename it.

In his veto message, Fiorentini asked that the city council work with him to develop a fitting memorial to Lance Corporal Nicholas Schiavoni and Lance Corporal Dimitrios Gavriel, both Haverhill natives who were killed in Iraq.

“These men, and Private Evan O’Neil, all gave their lives in defense of their country.  I was pleased to be at the naming of the veteran’s housing project for Private O’Neil.   We also need to honor in some fitting way Both Nicholas Schiavoni and Dimitrios Gavriel.  They were both Haverhill heroes who paid the ultimate price for freedom.  Our city will recognize them.

Fiorentini said that he would have a proposal before the council as soon as possible on a fitting way to honor both men.
