FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Mayor Orders Review of Brakes on All Fire Vehicles

HAVERHILL- Mayor James J. Fiorentini, acting in conjunction with Fire Chief Richard Borden, today ordered a review of the brakes on all city fire department vehicles. This action was taken following the tragedy in Boston when firefighter Lieutenant Kevin M. Kelley was killed when his truck lost its brakes.

“After the tragedy in Boston, the Fire Chief and I reviewed the procedure for maintenance of fire department vehicles” said Mayor Fiorentini. “The Fire Chief and I agree that our procedure is a good one, and our master mechanics routinely check and maintain all of our vehicles.”

“However, in light of the terrible tragedy in Boston, I felt that we should do an immediate review of the brakes of all of our fire trucks. We are confident that the review will show that the vehicles are safe, but we feel that this extra measure of safety is warranted,” added the Mayor.

The review is currently underway by master mechanics, and results are expected by the end of the day, Thursday, January 15.
