“City Takes Strong Action in Response to Shootings in Acre Area ”
In response to recent reports of gang activity in the Acre area of the city, the city today announced that strong action is being taken to keep that area safe.
Mayor James J. Fiorentini and police Chief Alan Denaro today issued a joint announcement that a number of arrests had been made in connection with the gang activity and that further action would follow.
The Police Department announced a series of arrests related to a melee last week. [Press note, details of the arrests are attached.]
The Mayor announced that additional funding, through the Federal block grant program (CDBG) would be made available for additional patrols in the acre area. The Mayor visited Arlington Street on the evening of the shooting and pledged to residents that the city would take whatever action necessary to keep their neighborhood safe. “We are not going to tolerate gang related activity in the city of Haverhill” said Fiorentini. “We are going to commit additional resources, and take the steps necessary to stop this before it gets out of control.”
The Mayor also announced a new program, to begin this fall, to send officers door to door to speak with parents of young people who may be involved in gangs. “The first line of defense against gangs is the home. We intend to speak directly to parents, to tell them their teenage children may be involved in gangs, and to ask for their help to stop it. We also intend to remind them there are laws that parents can be held liable for any damage done by their children and, where it is appropriate, we will enforce those laws.”
The Mayor also announced a community meeting to be held at the ____ Church next week to discuss these measures. “We are not going to abandon this or any other neigdhborhood in town” said Fiorentini. “At the meeting, we will outline to residents the steps we are taking and we will listen to their concerns and hear their suggestions. Keeping people safe is a top priority in this city and we intend to take strong action against those who engage in gang related activity.”
