Mayor James J. Fiorentini > Press Release MARGARET TOOMEY IS HAVERHILL’S NEW CITY CLERK Mayor James J. Fiorentini today announced the appointment of Margaret Toomey of Haverhill as the new City Clerk. Ms. Toomey was chosen from a field of fifty-seven applicants. In making the appointment Fiorentini stated; “Margaret Toomey’s education, background and experience make her ideally suited to be the new City Clerk in Haverhill.” She graduated from Merrimack College with highest honors—magna cum laude. She went on to get her Masters Degree in Political Science from the University of Indiana and again graduated with the highest honors. Ms. Toomey has thirty years work experience in both the public and private sector. She has worked for many years at the State House. She has worked for the election laws division at the State House and is familiar with elections—a key function of the City Clerk. She has been an aide to two state representatives and more recently a Chief of Staff to a state senator. She currently works managing over 100 interns at the Massachusetts State House and is in charge of the entire internship program. Ms. Toomey has also been an executive at Hunt Hospital and Executor and Lobbyist for Hunt Hospital. She has a wealth of experience in lobbying which can assist the City of Haverhill, a wealth of contacts on Beacon Hill and a wealth of knowledge about local and state government. One of the references for Haverhill’s new City Clerk said “this job was made for her.” In a way Margaret Toomey was born for the job. Her father was the long-time City Clerk in Danvers and it has been Peggy Toomey’s lifetime ambition to be a City Clerk. Ms. Toomey was chosen after an exhaustive two-step interview process. The first step of the process was conducted by an interview committee consisting of Personnel Director, Mary Carrington, City Solicitor William Cox, and former State Representative David Swartz. The interview committee unanimously recommended two candidates to Mayor Fiorentini, who remained uninvolved in the process until the final selection needed to be made. The second round of interviews were conducted by Mayor Fiorentini, his Chief of Staff, Brian Elworthy, personnel Director Mary Carrington and by Peter Koutoujian a retired City Clerk with thirty-five years of experience as Clerk in the town of Waltham. At the end of the second step of the process all members of the interview committee unanimously recommended Ms. Toomey in writing, as the best candidate, for City Clerk. |
