Mayor James J. Fiorentini > Press Release

Mayor Calls Sale of former Church Building Good for the City

This week, the city of Haverhill has completed the sale on the building on Washington Street, which once housed St. Georges Church in Haverhill.  The city acquired the property several years ago from the Church, and then sold it at a land auction. Under the terms of the sale, the City has received $280,000. The purchaser is Richard Kovoosi of Reading Massachusetts.  Mr. Kovoosi indicates that he intends to remodel the church into condominiums to be available for first-time buyers.

Mayor Fiorentini said that the sale was good for the taxpayers of the City and good for the neighborhood:

“The sale of this church is good for both Haverhill and the neighborhood.

“This takes a building off of our hands that we could no longer afford to maintain and which was rapidly becoming an eyesore. It puts the building back on the tax rolls as housing for first time buyers.

The sale of this building means that from the sale of land at auction we brought in over $1 million, with more sales yet to complete. This auction allowed us to get unused properties back on the tax rolls, and improve neighborhoods.”
